Balanced Equations and a Math Craftivity Freebie

This activity works well as a math center. I asked the children to pick a number between 10 and 20 to make their equations. We focused on addition but you could easily do subtraction or mixed facts what ever you feel your children need the most. After they wrote the equations to go with the number they chose, I had them to put that part of the lesson aside. Then I had them to color and cut out the stem and leaves and the flower. After they glued the pieces together they wrote their equations with vis-à-vis marker. We are going to take this lesson a step farther by making equation chains. Please visit again to see the other things we will be doing with balanced equations! You can download it from Google Drive here.

What Do You Love About Spring?

This is a wonderful freebie for place value study with Easter Bunnies. I'm going to put a couple in my math centers! Thanks so much to Primarily Inspired ABC

For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

by William Wordsworth

Daffodils are one of my favorite things about spring. I love new the new leaves. Birds making nests and the refreshing newness of the world. What are your favorite things about spring?

Photo from here
These are lovely and would be easy to make with children. I think children will add some lovely fun and it would be a sweet gift.

Play Dough Tens and Ones and Self Made Word Sorts

Teaching tens and ones to first graders is always a bit tricky! You will think they have it! Then you ask them to apply it in a different way and oh my...it's time to reteach. This year I have been trying to get in a lot of variations for all kinds of learners. I love play dough and the kids love play dough so away we go with play dough for tens and ones. I simply had the children to roll ten tiny balls of play dough and then mash the ten tiny balls together to make one. They did this in math centers. The children enjoyed the activity and it gave them a concrete representation of the singles transitioning into one. The next time we do this I am going to have them decompose it after they put roll it into one. They will be happy to see play dough in the math centers. Who knew learning could be this fun?
We love using word sorts in our class. This week I had the honeys fold their own papers for the word sort. They wrote the words on the paper themselves and then cut it apart. We were learning about -ed and -ing endings. They had a word bank to choose from for the words. After they cut their words apart they found a partner and played a memory game matching the -ed to the -ing endings of the same word. They switched partners a couple of times and they loved it. I was really proud of how well they worked together. We are going to do another self made sort this week with contractions.

Freebie Two Digit Addition for Valentine's Day and a Buzzing Bee

I have been exploring some new ways to make activities and looking for some more black line art. I love color and I print my non-consumable centers in color and on card stock whenever possible but there are certain types of activities that are just better in black and white...not to mention the savings in ink. I wanted to share two sheets I put together for two digit addition. It seems like a lot of first graders are working on this skill now.
You can get your freebie here on google drive. I would love some comments on what products you use most black and white, color or a mix of the two?

The Mitten A Math Bump It! Game

I have been begging, pleading and even whining for some snow here in Greensboro, North Carolina. Snow is a fickle thing in our area. One year we could have three huge snows and then no snow for a year. On the last day of school also the first day of winter we had snow flurries! Of course the kids went bonkers!! I never miss an opportunity for authentic learning so we grabbed our coats and out the door we went. The children were thrilled and so was I. When you teach little ones you have to remember that any opportunity could be the first experience for learning about something. We really don't get tired of snow or least I don't. The only time we are truly bummed out is when we miss a lot of school and we are still in class near the middle of June. Right now we are not thinking about that and we just want some snow for sledding, making snow cream and building snowmen. Since I have snow on the brain I created this math game to go with the story The Mitten. You can download the game at my Teachers Pay Teachers Store I hope you enjoy this free math game and think snow! If you do not have an account at Teachers Pay Teachers email me at idreamoffirstgrade@aol.com and put Mitten Bump It in the subject line! I will email you a copy.

Math Center Reindeer Bump It! First Grade and Kindergarten

I have been super busy this week. Our family helped our daughter's high school with the performance of "Charlotte's Web" I am super proud of my daughter, Olivia, who did all of the costumes! She is usually on stage so it was great to see her working in a different area. I am working on curriculum writing for our county and I haven't even put up the tree. I need to get a little busier I think! I wanted something new and festive for my math centers this week so I created this Reindeer Bump It game. I hope you all can use with your children!
