New Base Ten Kids Numbers and Operations Unit with a Freebie

This is part of my new unit for learning about Numbers and operations in Base Ten.

This is a great back to school unit for second grade and a great start for first graders and kindergarteners that need practice with this skill. This is a matching game the children can play that uses expanded form, base ten blocks and numbers. The unit is Practice in Base Ten with the Base Ten Kids. You can find the unit on Teachers Pay Teachers. There are 65 pages of activities for the common core standard for Numbers and Operations in Base Ten. A I have, Who has game with tens and ones using addition and subtraction is part of the unit. There are several center activities that can be used as finishers once the children understand how to play them.

Ten Frames for Matching Numbers
One of the centers is matching ten frames and ones with a number. A great way to play this game is to place magnetic tape on the back of the cards and let the children use cookie trays from a dollar store.

There are cards for a Poke It Game and for a Dice Roll Game. Many of the centers can become independent work stations and finishers once the children know how to play them.

Math Task Cards and Thinking Sheets
There are math task cards and thinking sheets so students can write and draw how they solved a math problem. There are a lot of worksheets as well in this unit so you can be sure you are getting a lot of bang for your buck! I have used variations of this unit in my classroom. I made this new unit with graphics that will appeal to boys and girls. The activities are challenging and I have provided for differentiation in this unit. You can use this unit throughout the school year. I can't wait to share this unit with my children at school. I'm sure they are going to love it. I have created this fun Pirate writing activity to help you and your students reflect on the wonderful year of learning you all have had together. Together you all can fill up the treasure chest with all your memories. There are versions for Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade. This is an open ended activity and you can print as many pages as you like. It would also be great for a class book as well. You could also share some of the writing with the children who will be moving up. I'm sure they would like to know what treasures they will find in their new grade level. School House Rock - Counting by Fives

I love this counting by Fives video by Schoolhouse Rock. Being able to count by fives is so important for telling time! I am going to share this with my honeys since we are working on telling time. We are referring to the clock throughout the day as we move through our schedule. I often ask them to count by fives to figure out what time it is. I know they will love this song. This class likes to dance! I love that about them so much!

Santa Wars Elf Addition Fun and More

It has been a crazy week and it is just Wednesday well almost Thursday! We went on our annual trip to local historical museum on Tuesday. It is a favorite trip of mine because I love, love old stuff. I have a lot of vintage clothes, a spinning wheel and I like to make stuff that looks old. Like this vintage hat I made for my daughter to wear when she was working the Titanic Traveling Exhibit.

My Mom taught me to do this stuff..she liked old stuff too. It could border on potential hoarding but I always feel better after I watch one of those shows. I thank God someone can help those folks and hope I don't need it myself one day. Teachers have hoarder tendencies don't tell now. Anyway back to the story. One of the docents for some crazy reason told the kids you know your Mom and Dads put the stuff under the tree...oh my...scandal and southern indignation broke out. Well who knows what happened to that poor fellow well we had already had the Santa Wars as I call them in the class. I tell the kids I believe in goodness and love and if that is what Santa is about well I believe!!! Anyway the honeys are still believin' and all is good in my little corner of the woods! Whew....that was a tale. Now I haven't created this week but I found this cute elf activity for adding over at Teach with Laughter. You will love it. Check out it and leave some nice comments!

Ten Days of Technology for First Grade Day Two

One app I use in my classroom for math is Hungry Fish . We are fortunate to have ipads and ipods in our school. This app helps children to think about number combinations. A fish with a number floats onto the screen and the player has to combine bubbles to match the number on the fish. There can be up to three addends. The children enjoy this app and it really makes them think about number combinations. The fish get bigger as it eats more bubbles! Enjoy,

Ten Days of Technology for First Grade

Welcome to Ten Days of Technology for First Grade! Daily for the next ten days I will focus on a program, app or technology integration that I use in my first grade classroom. The featured technology will be easy for you to use and more importantly will be excellent for your students. Today I'm sharing Sum Dog with you. All of the children like to use Sum Dog to practice math. They can access Sum Dog at home as well as school. There are not a lot of directions on the site but it is easy to manage. You sign up and enter your children and then you need to set the activity levels. To start with you should set everyone at Level One for numbers, addition and subtraction. The program will self level after the children play. Only your most advanced children would use Level Two at this time during the year. You can access reports about accuracy, speed and skills. We are enjoying using Sum Dog and we would love to have another first grade class to have some "friendly competitions with" as this is one of the features of the program.
