New Base Ten Kids Numbers and Operations Unit with a Freebie

This is part of my new unit for learning about Numbers and operations in Base Ten.

This is a great back to school unit for second grade and a great start for first graders and kindergarteners that need practice with this skill. This is a matching game the children can play that uses expanded form, base ten blocks and numbers. The unit is Practice in Base Ten with the Base Ten Kids. You can find the unit on Teachers Pay Teachers. There are 65 pages of activities for the common core standard for Numbers and Operations in Base Ten. A I have, Who has game with tens and ones using addition and subtraction is part of the unit. There are several center activities that can be used as finishers once the children understand how to play them.

Ten Frames for Matching Numbers
One of the centers is matching ten frames and ones with a number. A great way to play this game is to place magnetic tape on the back of the cards and let the children use cookie trays from a dollar store.

There are cards for a Poke It Game and for a Dice Roll Game. Many of the centers can become independent work stations and finishers once the children know how to play them.

Math Task Cards and Thinking Sheets
There are math task cards and thinking sheets so students can write and draw how they solved a math problem. There are a lot of worksheets as well in this unit so you can be sure you are getting a lot of bang for your buck! I have used variations of this unit in my classroom. I made this new unit with graphics that will appeal to boys and girls. The activities are challenging and I have provided for differentiation in this unit. You can use this unit throughout the school year. I can't wait to share this unit with my children at school. I'm sure they are going to love it. There is sample download with the unit so you can get one activity free! I hope Practice in Base Ten with the Base Ten Kids will be part of your Back to School planning!

Please visit my new blog, Teaching Resources for the Classroom, and follow. I am having a big contest soon with a $50.00 Dollar gift card to Target. Woohoo!!

Balanced Equations and a Math Craftivity Freebie

This activity works well as a math center. I asked the children to pick a number between 10 and 20 to make their equations. We focused on addition but you could easily do subtraction or mixed facts what ever you feel your children need the most. After they wrote the equations to go with the number they chose, I had them to put that part of the lesson aside. Then I had them to color and cut out the stem and leaves and the flower. After they glued the pieces together they wrote their equations with vis-à-vis marker. We are going to take this lesson a step farther by making equation chains. Please visit again to see the other things we will be doing with balanced equations! You can download it from Google Drive here.

Stellaluna 3-D Art I Love a Good Rectangle

There have been years when I really didn't want to read the book Stellaluna near Halloween. I'm a science freak and I really felt all of the great learning about bats was being drowned out by Halloween craziness. I really don't know why this year was different except that it seemed the perfect time to compare fiction and informational texts using the common core standards. Well I couldn't be happier with the little honeys and what they have learned. It is music to the teacher's soul to hear the kids using the language they have learned in school about comparing texts. I always have to have some kind of art activity and I wanted it to be "Science Art" as it is called in my class. That is real representations with an artistic twist. I used the trusty rectangle to help the children make their own original art. I have a lot of pictures so bear with me as I share. This project took about 4 days in 20-30 blocks. I have to show this picture first in case you don't look any further. This is one of the finished pieces and one of the little girls nestled a baby bat inside the Mom just like Stellaluna. Need I say more...
This shows one of the children cutting a bat from a brown rectangle of folded paper. I showed them an example of how to draw the half bat but they all drew their own and they are amazing.
Tearing light brown long rectangles to make the branches. It is important for me to show you these photos. I so believe in nurturing the creative spirit of children.
Almost finished piece without the leaves. We used the Stellaluna book for reference in making the art. We used brown instead of black since we were learning about fruit bats. Everything was made out of a series of rectangles. These kids are amazing!

Geometric Shapes Common Core 1.G Simple Simple Math Center

The children really enjoyed this math center this week. All you need is play dough and some geometric solids. It made them take a close look at the shapes and their attributes. The children made the shapes and then recorded their work with a digital snapshot. They really worked together well. I was impressed with the shapes they made. This activity addresses the core standard: 1.G Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. Enjoy!
